What to Expect During Your Procedure

Our one-day surgical abortion is typically available up to 19 weeks, depending on individual circumstances. The procedure is completed in a single visit and performed by experienced, certified providers in a modern, accredited facility.

  • Some patients at 19 weeks may qualify for either a one-day or two-day procedure. Our team will help determine the best option for your safety and comfort.
  • Special planning may be needed for:
    • Minors (please call the office to discuss scheduling)
    • First pregnancies (may require additional cervical preparation)
    • Medical conditions (e.g., high blood pressure, diabetes)
    • History of cesarean sections or uterine fibroids
    • Multiple gestations (twins, etc.)
  • Your care plan will be tailored to your specific needs.

Consultation: Meet with your physician to review your medical history and discuss the procedure.

Lab Work & Ultrasound: Confirm pregnancy duration and assess your overall health.

Preoperative Medications: You’ll receive medications to prevent nausea, reduce anxiety (anxiolytic), and prevent infection (antibiotic).

Cervical Preparation: Misoprostol is given to soften and dilate the cervix before the procedure.

Technique: The procedure is performed using Dilation & Curettage (D&C, 3–5 minutes) or Dilation & Evacuation (D&E, 10–20 minutes), depending on gestational age.

Monitoring: Your vital signs and comfort are closely monitored throughout.

Support: Our team will guide you through each step and answer any questions before and after the procedure.

Recovery Suite: You’ll rest in our recovery area for 30–45 minutes

Snacks & Drinks: Light refreshments are provided to help you regain energy.

Support Person/driver: Will be contacted to take you home at the end of your in-clinic recovery.

Discharge: Most patients leave the clinic feeling comfortable and confident about their recovery plan.

At-Home Care: Expect mild cramping and light to moderate bleeding for a few days. Take all medications as directed. Most patients recover well at home with minimal discomfort

When to Seek Help: Contact us or seek emergency care if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or fever.

Follow-Up: Usually not needed but appointments and 24/7 support are available.

Cervical exam findings, prior pregnancies or deliveries, and other individual clinical factors all help determine the safest approach. Many patients up to 19 weeks can have a one-day procedure, while others may benefit from additional cervical preparation and a two-day approach. During your consultation, our experienced physicians will review your specific situation and recommend the option that is safest and most appropriate for you.

Patients beyond 19 weeks, or who need additional cervical preparation, may require our two-day second-trimester procedure, available through 23 weeks.

For patients up to 19 weeks, the procedure is completed in a single day using our advanced protocols. Most patients between 19 and 23 weeks follow a two-day process. A follow-up appointment may be recommended based on your individual needs.

You may experience mild cramping and moderate to light bleeding, which can be managed with over-the-counter medications. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided.

Contact us at 443-394-0520 if you experience symptoms like fever, excessive bleeding (soaking 2 maxi pads per hour for more than 2 hours), or severe pain not relieved by medication.

With moderate sedation and advanced pain management options, most patients feel comfortable and relaxed throughout.

Yes, you’ll need a driver or support person to accompany you to check-in if you are getting IV sedation.
