Second-Trimester Abortion Care: 19–23 Weeks

The two-day surgical abortion is generally required for pregnancies between 19 and 23 weeks. Some patients up to 19 weeks may qualify for a one-day procedure, depending on individual circumstances. Our team will guide you in choosing the safest option.

Eligibility: 2 day procedure required for most patients 19–23 weeks; some exceptions at 19 weeks.

Special Planning: Minors, first pregnancies, certain medical conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes), uterine fibroids, multiple gestations (twins, etc.) or prior cesarean sections may require additional preparation.

Consultation: Meet with your physician to review your medical history and discuss the process.

Lab Work & Ultrasound: Confirm gestational age and overall health.

Mifepristone pill: Taken in clinic to prepare the uterus for the procedure.

Feticidal Injection (Digoxin): For pregnancies over 20 weeks, this may be administered as part of the protocol.

Most patients experience minimal side effects and can continue normal activities at home.

If you experience severe cramping or other concerning symptoms overnight, please seek emergency care immediately.

Return to Clinic: For the surgical procedure.

Preoperative Medications: On Day 2, you may receive medications to prevent nausea, reduce anxiety (anxiolytic), and prevent infection (antibiotic).

Misoprostol: You will take misoprostol at home the morning of your procedure. Additional doses may be given in the clinic as needed to ensure adequate cervical dilationd.

Procedure: The Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) procedure typically takes 10–20 minutes and is performed by experienced, certified providers.

Continuous Monitoring: Your safety and comfort are closely monitored throughout.

Recovery Suite: Rest in our recovery area for 30–45 minutes

Snacks & Drinks: Light refreshments are provided.

Support Person/driver: Will be contacted to take you home at the end of your in-clinic recovery.

Discharge: Most patients leave feeling comfortable and confident about their recovery plan.

At-Home Care: Expect mild cramping and light to moderate bleeding. Follow all medication and activity guidelines provided. Most patients recover well at home with minimal discomfort

When to Seek Help: Contact us or seek emergency care if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms.

Follow-Up: Usually not needed  but appointments and 24/7 support are available.
